The vocabulary has changed, but the central question has not: what happened, what evidence remains and which conclusions can that evidence actually support?

What Ufology Studies
Ufology is not one settled academic discipline with universally accepted credentials, methods or conclusions. It is better understood as a broad field of inquiry assembled from aviation reports, eyewitness interviews, historical research, astronomy, atmospheric science, photography, radar analysis, intelligence records, sociology, psychology and the study of government institutions.
At its best, ufology preserves reports that might otherwise disappear, compares cases across time, seeks records, interviews witnesses and asks whether an observation can be explained by known objects or phenomena. At its worst, it rewards confident stories before verification, treats every gap in official knowledge as proof of concealment, or turns ambiguous material into certainty.
Taming Gravity does not ask readers to choose between two identities—“believer” or “debunker.” A sincere witness may report an extraordinary experience without possessing enough information to identify its cause. A skeptical explanation may be plausible without being proven. A case may remain unresolved without becoming evidence for one preferred origin.
From UFO to UAP
UFO literally means an unidentified flying object. Popular culture gradually made it sound like a synonym for an alien spacecraft, even though the word itself identifies no origin. UAP is now commonly expanded as unidentified anomalous phenomena. The newer term is intended to reduce that cultural assumption and accommodate reports that may involve more than a conventional object “flying” through the atmosphere.

A Field Shaped by History
The modern UFO era is usually traced to the wave of reports that entered American public attention in 1947. Military investigations followed under programs including Project Sign, Project Grudge and Project Blue Book. Civilian researchers, journalists and membership organizations built parallel archives, pursued witnesses and challenged official explanations. Later decades brought famous cases, alleged encounters, congressional interest, document releases and recurring cycles of enthusiasm and dismissal.
This history matters because UAP evidence does not arrive in a vacuum. National-security secrecy, experimental aerospace programs, Cold War fears, folklore, entertainment, commercial incentives and genuine observation have repeatedly overlapped. Some reports have acquired layers of retelling that are nearly as influential as the underlying event. Investigating a historical case therefore requires asking not only what was reported, but when each detail first appeared, who recorded it and how the account changed.
The archive is evidence—but not all records are equal
A contemporaneous report, a later memoir, a declassified briefing, an anonymous allegation and an official conclusion are different kinds of material. Each may be historically important. They should never be blended into a single undifferentiated claim.
The Evidence Hierarchy
No single ranking fits every case, but a useful investigation distinguishes the source and quality of each claim.
- Original instrumental data: calibrated radar, telemetry, satellite data, full-resolution imagery or other sensor records with metadata.
- Correlated observations: independent witnesses or different sensor systems observing the same event from known locations.
- Contemporaneous documentation: logs, recordings, reports, photographs and interviews created close to the event.
- Physical material or effects: samples, traces or injuries supported by documented collection, chain of custody and appropriate independent analysis.
- Firsthand testimony: valuable evidence about experience, strengthened by specificity, proximity, consistency and corroboration.
- Later recollection: potentially important but vulnerable to memory reconstruction, cultural influence and the loss of original context.
- Researcher interpretation: an argument built from evidence—not the evidence itself.
- Rumor or anonymous secondhand claims: leads that may justify further inquiry but cannot carry a major conclusion without verification.
A high-status witness is not automatically correct, and an ordinary witness is not automatically mistaken. Expertise may improve recognition within a person’s field, but unfamiliar angles, incomplete duration, stress and missing reference points can affect anyone. Conversely, testimony should not be discarded merely because it describes something unusual.
How a UAP Case Should Be Investigated
A responsible investigation starts with preservation, not explanation. Obtain the earliest available account. Record exact time, duration, direction, apparent angular size, elevation, weather, visibility, witness location and movement. Preserve original files and metadata before enhancement. Identify other possible observers and independent sensor records.
Next, compare the event with air traffic, satellites, astronomical objects, balloons, drones, launches, atmospheric effects, camera artifacts and known military or civilian activity. For imagery, distinguish what appears in the file from what is inferred about distance, size or speed. Extraordinary performance cannot be calculated reliably when range and viewing geometry are unknown.
Finally, document the outcome in calibrated language:
- Identified: the available evidence supports a specific ordinary explanation.
- Probably identified: one explanation best fits, but decisive information is missing.
- Insufficient data: the report cannot be evaluated responsibly.
- Unresolved: meaningful evidence remains after reasonable alternatives are tested, but no origin is established.
Unresolved does not mean unimportant
A case may reveal an aviation hazard, a sensor limitation, an intelligence concern, an unknown natural phenomenon—or something more consequential. Preserving uncertainty is what keeps all legitimate possibilities open.
Explanations and Hypotheses
Most UAP reports do not require one universal explanation. The reported population may include astronomical objects, aircraft, balloons, drones, atmospheric effects, sensor artifacts, perceptual errors, deliberate hoaxes and classified technology. Some cases remain unresolved because their data are weak. Others remain interesting because multiple lines of evidence resist straightforward explanation.
The extraterrestrial hypothesis proposes that at least some events involve technology or intelligence originating beyond Earth. It deserves examination as a hypothesis, especially in a universe where planetary systems are common and the search for life is a legitimate scientific undertaking. Yet cosmic plausibility is not case-specific proof.
Other proposals include previously unknown natural phenomena, advanced terrestrial aerospace systems, nonhuman intelligence with an origin not adequately described by conventional extraterrestrial travel, and interpretations involving consciousness or aspects of reality not yet understood. These ideas differ greatly in testability and supporting evidence. They should not be treated as interchangeable, nor should a mysterious observation be used to confirm whichever explanation a researcher already favors.
Taming Gravity remains open to the possibility that humanity’s current picture is incomplete. Openness becomes meaningful only when paired with the discipline to say possible, suggestive, unresolved or demonstrated as the evidence warrants.
Why the Subject Is So Difficult
UAP events are usually brief, unexpected and poorly instrumented. Witnesses may not report promptly. Original recordings may be compressed, cropped or stripped of metadata. Military sensors are designed for defense rather than public scientific study, and their capabilities may be classified. Historical files may be incomplete. Government statements may be constrained by security, bureaucracy or limited jurisdiction rather than a single coordinated policy.
The public information environment adds another layer. Ridicule can suppress honest reports. Sensational headlines can overstate ambiguous evidence. Social media separates images from provenance. Promoters may gain attention or income from certainty, while institutions may gain comfort by avoiding a stigmatized subject. Skeptics and proponents can both fall into confirmation bias.
This does not make investigation futile. It makes provenance, transparency and reproducible analysis essential. NASA’s UAP study has emphasized identifying available data, improving future collection and applying scientific analysis. The National Archives now provides a dedicated route into federal UFO and UAP records, while AARO publishes official imagery, case-resolution reports and information papers. These resources are not the final word on the phenomenon; they are primary records that should be examined alongside credible civilian research, witness material and independent analysis.
A Better Future for UAP Research
The field will advance less through louder arguments than through better observations. Useful progress requires standardized reporting, calibrated multi-sensor collection, preservation of raw files, accessible archives, interdisciplinary expertise and protection for responsible witnesses. It also requires a culture capable of investigating an extraordinary possibility without manufacturing extraordinary certainty.
Civilian researchers have an important role. They can preserve local and historical reports, submit records requests, compare official documents, develop transparent databases and revisit influential cases. Scientists and engineers can clarify what sensors measure, what flight claims actually require and which hypotheses can be tested. Historians can reconstruct provenance. Journalists can distinguish disclosure from publicity. Experiencers can be treated with dignity without every interpretation being accepted as fact.
The ultimate goal is not to make ufology respectable by changing its name. It is to make the investigation reliable enough that the name matters less than the quality of the work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are UFO and UAP the same thing?
They substantially overlap, but UAP is a broader modern term intended to reduce the assumption that every report involves a discrete flying object. Historical material still commonly uses UFO.
Does “unidentified” mean extraterrestrial?
