A government report can provide authenticated institutional information while still reflecting incomplete data, classification limits or an agency’s interpretation. A scientific paper can be serious yet preliminary, poorly replicated or outside its author’s area of expertise.
Questions applied to important sources
- Is this the original source or a retelling?
- Can the author or institution reasonably know what is claimed?
- Are methods, dates, documents and underlying data available?
- Has the quotation been preserved in context?
- Do independent sources converge without tracing back to the same origin?
- What relevant incentives, restrictions or conflicts should readers know?
