There has been a bunch of research done Juan Piantino who works at the OHSU School of Medicine about how a space flight can change someone’s brain. The research of this study dealt with looking at images of 15 different astronauts brains before and after they went on a tour of the International Space Station. Magnetic resonance imaging was used to look at the space around blood vessels in the astronauts brains. There was an increase in perivascular spaces in first time astronauts but not experienced ones.
Key Takeaways:
- This process involved research where brain images were taken before and after tours of the International Space Station.
- Magnetic resonance imaging was used to view the space around blood vessels in an astronauts brain before and after the launch.
- The research team hadn’t found any issues when it came to balance or visual memories even though there were differences in their brains.
“Comparing before and after images, they found an increase in the perivascular spaces within the brains of first-time astronauts, but no difference among astronauts who previously served aboard the space station orbiting earth.”
