Washington state has a longstanding history of UFO sightings, with the third-highest number of sightings in the US. Since 1974, there have been 6,932 reports of Unexplained Flying Objects. The interest in UFOs is global, with countries like Brazil and the UK also documenting sightings.

The US government acknowledged the existence of UFOs in June 2021. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence at the Pentagon investigates UFO activity and publishes an annual report. The report for 2022 shows that UFO sightings, referred to as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP), have significantly increased. Since the creation of the All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office in July 2022, there have been 366 reports of UAPs.

The Pentagon report does not specify where the sightings were made, but the majority originate from US Navy and Air Force aviators and operators in restricted or sensitive airspace. The All-Domain Anomaly Resolution Office categorizes UAPs into five explanations: airborne clutter, natural atmospheric phenomena, US government or industry developmental programs, foreign adversary systems, and other.

The increase in sightings may be due to efforts to destigmatize the topic of UAPs and recognize potential flight hazards. In 2022, 162 reports were made in Washington to the National UFO Reporting Center.
