What would evolution on Mars look like?
Say we colonize other planets, over time what would happen to us?
Dr. Matt O’Dowd of PBS Space-Time (a YouTube Channel) explains that we can expect that any differences what so ever, will affect how we turn out. The first planet we will have this experience on will most likely be Mars.
Factors involved will include:
- Atmospheric Pressures
- Gravitational Strength
- Geological conditions
- Our Science and Technologies responding to these factors
Their affects may include:
- Our weight may change to handle the difference in gravity.
- Our height may also change to adapt to change in gravity.
- Changes in Skin Pigment may also happen due to the difference in geography.
Terraforming through our Technolgies may mitigate some of these affects. Yet, over time with very long exposure to these differences in planets we may see enormous changes genetically. And at some point, we may have a different species. This is called Speciation.
This may mean that as Martians we, they may not be able to handle living on Earth any more.
Follow along as Dr. Matt O’Dowd explains in more detail how this may all work out.
~Does Dr. Matt O’Dowd get it right? What do you think? Will we find ourselves becoming a different species by living on a different planet for a long enough time? Let me know in the comment area below.
