We have now found the faster orbiting asteroid in our solar system. Currently it takes around 113 days for a full rotation around the sun.
This small asteroid is only .6 miles in size. It gets so close to the sun that its temperatures reach 900 degrees F. Due to this it is thought that this asteroid is mostly made of metal.
Soon it will pass around the sun and we will not be able to see it again until 2022.
Key Takeaways:
- This .6 mile sized asteroid comes within 12.4 million miles of our sun.
- It takes this asteroid only 113 days to orbit around the sun.
- The asteroid won’t be observable until 2022 due to it being behind the sun.
“That gives this space rock the distinction of having the shortest known orbital period for an asteroid — and only the second shortest orbit around the sun after Mercury, which takes 88 days to complete its orbital journey around our star.”
