A study now just confirmed an old theory that we have never seen. We observed gas from another galaxy being pulled out, only to be brought back in. We call it a cosmic boomerang.
The ALMA radio telescope was used to confirm these theories. One major effect noticed was that this has the possibility of making a galaxy not be able to produce planets.
With this new development we can now research life and death of a galaxy and its planet production.
Key Takeaways:
- Ram pressure stripping pushes the gas used to make new stars into deep space, making it harder to create new stars.
- Researchers who studied the galaxy NGC 4921 observed gas boomeranging back into the galaxy.
- One researcher suggested that magnetic effects may be playing a role in this process.
“In a study confirming an event long theorized but never seen, a team of astrophysicists has observed gas from a distant galaxy being pulled out of it only to boomerang back in.”
